Massive Explosion Rocks Fort Worth Hotel, Multiple Injuries Reported

A large explosion rocked a hotel in Fort Worth, Texas on Monday leaving multiple people injured, according to various reports.

The explosion “blew out at least two floors” of the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Hotel, according to NBC DFW. One person was reportedly in critical condition while two others were in serious condition and at least eight others were injured.

Various officials said that the cause of the explosion at the 245-room high rise hotel appeared to be a natural gas leak.

“There is a smell of gas here in downtown,” said Craig Trojacek with the Fort Worth Fire Department. “We’re not sure if the smell of gas was caused from the explosion and the fire itself or if that’s what caused the explosion. But that’s what we’re looking at.”

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said in a statement, “There has been an explosion incident in downtown Fort Worth this afternoon, and every Fort Worth emergency response agency is on hand responding.”

“We will provide more information as available,” she added. “My heart and prayers are with those who were injured as we continue managing response.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement that he had spoken with Parker and Sheriff Waybourn to offer them any resources they needed as they navigate the recovery process.

“The State of Texas is in close contact with Mayor Parker, Sheriff Waybourn, and other local partners and first responders in Fort Worth to assist with emergency response efforts following the tragic explosion at the Sandman Hotel,” Abbott said. “We continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to immediately deploy any additional personnel and resources needed to keep Texans in the area safe and out of harm’s way. Cecilia and I ask all Texans to pray for those who were injured in the explosion, as well as those bravely responding to keep others safe.”
