MTG Plans Another Mayorkas Impeachment Effort After Thanksgiving

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said on Sunday that she would try again to get Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas impeached after the House punted on her latest effort last week.

The congresswoman, who often is referred to as “MTG,” told Fox anchor Maria Bartiromo that she would bring articles of impeachment back to the House floor when lawmakers return after the Thanksgiving break.

“This time, the Republicans in Congress better deliver different results,” Greene said on “Sunday Morning Futures.” “Mayorkas must be impeached, and the invasion must stop,” she added, referring to the U.S. border with Mexico.

Eight Republicans joined with all voting Democrats last week to approve a motion that kicked Greene’s impeachment resolution to the House Homeland Security Committee, which is already investigating Mayorkas for alleged dereliction of duty in a probe that could lead to impeachment proceedings in the future. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security has derided what a spokesperson called “reckless impeachment charades” by congressional Republicans.

Some of the GOP holdouts explained that they do hope to see Mayorkas impeached, but stressed they want to do so in a way that is not rushed and ensures a conviction in the Senate — a high bar at the moment as the upper chamber is controlled by the Democrats who are generally aligned with the White House.

“We didn’t kill a Mayorkas impeachment. We voted to launch hearings and make our case to the entire nation. If we impeached Mayorkas today, the Senate would have rejected it today,” said Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) in a post to X. “House Democrats will now have to defend Biden or admit his border disaster. We can win this.”

Greene, who has been critical of the “regular order” route favored by some of her colleagues, argued in favor of taking immediate action against Mayorkas despite the setback last week, citing such pressing issues as drug trafficking and the prospect of a terrorist attack.

“It’s absolutely outrageous,” she said. “I serve on the Homeland Committee. We have had hearing after hearing listening to parents cry over their children murdered by fentanyl. I mean, we are wondering how many … dead American bodies are going to have to pile up before Republicans in Congress get serious about impeaching Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.”
