Female bus driver hailed a hero after stopping mid-ride fatal shooting

A quick-thinking Florida bus driver is being hailed a hero after she barreled into the parking lot of the Fort Lauderdale police headquarters during an active shooting that was unfolding on her route, ABC News reported.

Authorities say that the suspect, 34-year-old Jamal Meyers, killed two passengers before the bus ended up at headquarters. Two other people were injured in connection with the shooting, and three others were said to have been injured in a fender bender caused by the commotion on the roads.

What are the details?

The incident took place Thursday afternoon after shots rang out on the Broward County Transit bus.

The driver said upon realizing there was an active shooting taking place on the bus, she forced her way into a busy turning lane and barreled straight into the police headquarters parking lot. Upon hearing the melee, officers rushed out of the building and took the suspect into custody without incident.

Acting Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Luis Alvarez said that the driver's "quick actions ... saved lives."

"[K]udos to her," Alvarez added. "She deserves to be applauded for her actions. ... [Deftly maneuvering the bus in traffic] is a difficult thing to do. Not many people would have behaved the way this bus driver behaved and to get to the front of the police station.”

Meyers — a repeat offender — faces charges of murder, attempted murder, weapons possession by a convicted felon, and violating probation. Additional charges, WFLA-TV reported, are pending.

It is unclear at the time of this reporting what prompted the shooting.

Anything else to know about this?

According to a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, one witness recalled the moments after the police intervened in the attack.

“The people came off the bus with their hands up, and the police just started running everywhere, coming from everywhere,” witness Natasha McGee told the outlet.
