'Drop the knife, bro!' HS student caught on video repeatedly stabbing fellow student in back, hands before school staff break it up

A high school student in New York state was caught on video repeatedly stabbing a fellow student in the back and hands before teachers stepped in to break it up.

What are the details?

Police in Utica told WKTV-TV the altercation took place at Proctor High School on Monday morning. Police added to the station that a 17-year-old student was stabbing an 18-year-old student in a hallway, and staff members were able to intervene, with one taking the knife away.

Nursing staff helped the victim, who was stabbed multiple times in the back and hands, WKTV said. The victim was taken to a hospital; police told the station his injuries aren't considered life-threatening.

The 17-year-old student is facing attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon charges, WKTV reported.

'Drop the knife, bro!'

Cellphone video of the knife attack shows a student in a red shirt jogging down a hallway and swinging from behind at a student in a blue shirt.

The student in the blue shirt quickly turned around and began fighting the student in the red shirt, who was seen holding a knife in his left hand:

The student in the blue shirt pulled the attacking student in the red shirt to the hallway floor as other students began calling out, "He's got knife! He's got a knife!"

The two students wound up standing against a wall and struggling for control of the weapon as other students yelled, "Drop the knife, bro!"

Soon a staff member intervened and managed to bang the students' hands against a wall, dislodging the knife.

The staffer who took possession of the knife then yelled at another staffer to "get over here!"

When a second staffer arrived, he grabbed the victim in the blue shirt and took him down to the floor away from the attacker, presumably not aware of which student did the stabbing.

It isn't clear what, if anything, preceded the knife attack. In addition, just before the attacking student jogged up behind the victim, the attacking student appeared to look back in the direction of the individual who was recording video:

Anything else?

Police are asking any students who recorded video of the incident to contact the assistant principal or a counselor so police can review the videos as part of the investigation, WKYW said.

The Utica City School District had just installed a weapons detection system at each school building at the start of the year, the station said, adding that acting Superintendent Brian Nolan said officials are working with police to try and determine how the knife made it into the building.

"We're looking at the metal-detecting systems themselves, we're looking at the calibration, the police are interviewing the assailant and trying to get information from him on how the weapon was brought into the school," he said, according to WKYW.

There will be an increased police presence at the school for the rest of the week, both inside and outside the building, the station said, adding that students won't be allowed to exit the school building during free periods or lunch for the rest of the week.
