Boris Johnson is apparently considering throwing his hat in the ring to reclaim his position as British Prime Minister (PM) just 45 days after his resignation, the Telegraph reported Wednesday.
Following the resignation of former PM Liz Truss, several Tories have voiced support for Johnson, who currently leads in the polls with a third of Tories backing him, according to the Telegraph. Johnson is apparently willing to run again if he can get the support of at least 100 Members of Parliament (MP), according to the outlet.
“Is he up for it? The answer is ‘yes’ if he can be persuaded that the numbers exist,” an MP told the Telegraph.
Johnson’s former Secretary of State Nadine Dorries showed her support, tweeting that MPs must “demand” Johnson’s return, or else leave it to a general election.
“If Liz Truss is no longer PM there can be no coronation of previously failed candidates,” her tweet read. “It is inconceivable that we could continue to face the world parading the notion that we are a democracy.”
If he runs, Johnson is likely to face off against Tory MP Rishi Sunak, according to the Washington Post. Sunak had previously led the charge for Johnson’s resignation and then unsuccessfully vied for his position.
Also expected to run are Troy MPs Penny Mordaunt and Ben Wallace, the outlet noted.
Truss resigned Thursday after just six weeks following uproar after a tax plan that sent markets tanking as the country struggles with a 40-year high in cost of living.
