Stanford soccer goalkeeper Katie Meyer, who helped lead the school to victory in the 2019 NCAA College Cup championship, was found dead Tuesday at one of the university’s residence halls.
The County of Santa Clara Medical Examiner-Coroner released a statement Thursday determining the 22-year-old soccer star died by suicide.
“Katie was extraordinarily committed to everything and everyone in her world. Her friends describe her as a larger-than-life team player in all her pursuits,” Stanford University said in a statement. “Katie was a bright shining light for so many on the field and in our community. There are no words to express the emptiness that we feel at this moment."
Katie’s parents, Gina and Steven Meyer, spoke out about their daughter's death by suicide on the "Today" show on Friday.
"The last couple days are like a parent’s worst nightmare, and you don’t wake up from it. So it’s just horrific," Gina said.
"We’re just, we’re struggling right now," she added. "We are struggling to know what happened, and why it happened. We’re just heartbroken, so heartbroken."
People across the country have taken to social media to demonstrate an outpouring of love and support for Katie and her family.
